The dawn of order.
Acrylic on paper glued on hard wooden panel. Size: 17" x

Forms, shapes, color harmonics, textures, rhythms, fluctuations, waves
and patterns are discernible in the general confusion and will
eventually go reinforcing themselves. But the road is still long to
reach their complete being, many accidents are still possible that
could derail the process in the making.
Irreversibility shows us that the movement is going forward and
uncertainty shows us that it is at the mercy of influences that are out
of our sight and out of our ability to forecast.
This describes quite well the situation that the human specie finds
itself locked into in late modernity at the dawn of the 21st
century.
The expansion of modernity to the four corners of the earth has wrought
upon us much uncertainty:
- Traditional societal modes of organization are crumbling bringing
about chaos in most of the countries. The last round of globalization
of trade and finance extended that chaos to the industrialized
countries themselves.
- The other living species are struggling to survive the assault by
human modernity on their environmental niches and scientists are
describing this as being the 5th period of mass-extinction to have
occurred on earth.
- The conditions of modernity have imposed themselves, along the last
two centuries, on barely 15% of the world population but the impact of
that process has brought the climates of different regions to a point
of rupture that will spell trouble for the survival of large swathes of
population among the most needy and that could possibly bring about the
collapse of our societal systems and ultimately of modernity itself.
- The technologies that permitted the expansion of trade and finance
also opened the windows of each house on earth onto a very peculiar
image of the global village that has been fashioned by invested
capital: Hollywood, Las Vegas, New York,... In one go the whole world
got to swallow traditionally forbidden images of individualism and
greed. This led those 85% of the people on earth, who had
remained excluded from modernity until then, to bang on the table
claiming their own access to what they perceive as the goodies of
modernity.
